Architecture combines tradition with modernity
Three buildings that were built in 1872, 1905, and 1923 underwent major construction upgrades focused on creating a modern environment that would be suitable for study and research and for eco-friendly maintenance. The architectural design was provided by Petr Pelčák, who combined modern functionalist effectiveness with historical decorations in the form of classical sculpture castings.

New teaching spaces
The capacity of teaching spaces has significantly increased thanks to the reconstruction that began in 2011 and was completed in 2015. Over the past fifteen years, the number of students at the Faculty of Arts MU has almost tripled – the CARLA project ensured that this increase did not affect the quality of teaching. More auditoriums equipped with modern teaching aids means, among other things, more courses from which students can choose.

Laboratory for experimental research in the humanities
The CARLA project created a good base for the faculty’s scientific teams. The research infrastructure includes the well-equipped, high-technology HUME lab – Laboratory for Experimental Research in the Humanities. It has two multifunctional testing rooms and it is equipped with mobile devices for field research.

More space for books
Approximately one fifth of the renovated space is used as storage for book collections. The new Library of Tomas Garrigue Masaryk is here, where visitors can study the works of Masaryk as well as publications dedicated to him and generally to the history of Czech philosophy of the 19th and 20th centuries. Facilities are here for the extensive library of the Institute of History, which comprises 55,000 library units.

Powerful robotic scanner for digitizing books, photos, and films
In addition to making books available to public in a physical form, the Faculty also intensively works on their digitization. Under the new conditions, a powerful robotic scanner was launched for digitizing books, photos, and films; it is able to scan more than 2000 pages in an hour.
