Description The book describes the formative phase of Czech-American community in the 19th century USA from transatlantic perspective. The book is based on research in Czech and American archives and introduces new perspectives on the issue of Czech immigration to America. The main goal is to explain mutual relations between Czech society, American society and the Czech-American community. This includes also formation of mutual images and stereotypes, immigrant constructs of new homeland, coexistence with other ethnic minorities, religious conflict among Czechs in the USA, or the role of the founding period in Czech-American historical memory.
