Description The paper deals with the events that took place immediately after the death of the chief constable of the German riot police, Wilhelm Kniest. He was ambushed and shot to death by Jan Smudek and his classmate František Petr on the night of June 8, 1939 in Kladno. In connection with the death of the German policeman, the Nazi authorities in Kladno launched extensive measures within which several Kladno citizens, including the mayor of the city, František Pavel, were arrested. The arrested men were first questioned in Kladno and then transported to Špilberk prison in Brno. There they were interned until June 12, 1939 when they were transferred to the Mauthausen concentration camp. Two of the Kladno prisoners did not survive the internment in the Špilberk prison, namely mayor of the city František Pavel and worker František Louda.
