Portuguese Language and Literature
Language and culture: the gateway to the world.
The goal of the Master’s degree study programme is to develop and deepen the knowledge and skills acquired in the Bachelor’s degree study programme, and to prepare a philologist with a broader foundation in Romance studies. Students will focus on wider diachronic aspects of linguistic research and will concentrate upon a more complicated level of syntax, semantics and stylistics; in literary criticism, they will gain deeper insight into the methodology of literary scholarship and the awareness of a wider context of Romance literatures and the place of Portuguese and Lusophone literature in it. Enrolling students will have language mastery at the C1 level and graduates will have language mastery at the C2 level according to the CEFR.
A successful graduate is able to
- produce dignified written and oral expression in Portuguese at the C2 level according to the CEFR
- utilize detailed knowledge of the social, political, cultural, literary, and linguistic situations in Portugal and other Lusophone countries
Graduates with this degree are capable of complex written and oral expression in Portuguese. They are equipped with a detailed and deep theoretical knowledge and practical skills related to the social, political and cultural situation in Portugal and other Portuguese-speaking countries. They have good knowledge of another selected Romance language and country. In addition to working in the fields of translating, interpreting, editing, journalism, tourism, business, and mid-level and upper management, they are well-suited for any profession that demands the ability to think independently and critically and express themselves in both their mother tongue and Portuguese.
