General Information

The aim of this doctoral degree study programme is to prepare scholars in the field of education. A graduate of the doctoral study programme in education is qualified to independently carry out highly specialized scholarly and research activities in educational fields. Graduates are equipped with skills and knowledge in basic and more specialized educational disciplines, in the methodology of educational research, designing and conducting empirical research and evaluating its results, in presenting original research findings to the scholarly community, and in cooperating with specialists from other departments both on national and international level.

Study modes

Doctoral studies are exclusively one-subject study programs. The length of study of all study programs is four years. Graduates of Doctoral degree study programs are awarded an internationally recognized scientific degree of philosophiæ doctor (Ph.D.). The doctoral study represents the highest degree of university education.

You can choose between:

  1. Full-time study means that your study duties are spread over the working days (Mon-Fri) according to your timetable. Full-time students participate in lectures, conferences, and educational and research activities of the workplace.
  2. Part-time (combined) study is more often chosen by those applicants who have other responsibilities (e.g. employment or family) that do not allow them to attend classes daily so they can "combine" work/family with studies.

Graduate employment

Graduates of the doctoral degree study programme in education can be a valuable human resource particularly at higher-education institutions, especially departments of educational sciences of faculties of education; at faculties of art and other faculties of similar orientation in the Czech Republic; in various educational organizations and research departments; and in consultancy and managerial organizations.

Admission Requirements

Eligibility Criteria

Only university graduates of Master's degree programmes with a corresponding or similar specialization can be admitted to the doctoral study programme (full-time or combined mode) after passing an entrance examination.

You do not have to come to Brno personally to take the entrance exam. The result of the admission process depends on the quality of the documents that you provide. Those will be assessed by the admission committee and you will be notified about the results via e-mail.

Terms of Admission

  1. Meet the eligibility criteria set out in the paragraph above.
  2. Submission of an electronic application in the Masaryk University Information System.
  3. Submission of a research proposal for the doctoral dissertation (in English).
  4. Submission of a list of published works (if any).
  5. Submission of an academic Curriculum Vitae (in English).
  6. Submission of an officially attested copy of the applicant's Master's degree (recognition of a foreign university degree, if applicable).
  7. Demonstrate English-language skills at the C2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Language.
  8. Receive a positive recommendation from the Education Doctoral Studies Committee, which is based on an oral entrance examination and a complex evaluation of the materials set out in Items 1 to 7.
Entrance exam

The evaluation of the applications will be done in two steps:

  1. Evaluation of the submitted documents.
  2. An oral interview via Skype.
Contents of the oral entrance examination
  1. The extent of preparedness for academic research.
  2. Applicant's conception for the major specialization in terms of the studied subject.
  3. The dissertation project.
  4. Language skills.

1 January - 30 April for the enrollment in the Fall semester
1 July - 30 September for the enrollment in the Spring semester

Documents set out above in the Terms of Admission are required to be provided in digital form and attached to the online application by April 30th or September 30th.

Tuition Fee

Tuition fees: € 2,500/academic year (degree program taught in English).

    Students who require a visa and who are denied one will be refunded 90 % of the school-fee only if they send us confirmation that their visa was denied. The money will be returned by bank transfer only.

Courses of Czech for Foreigners

All students of this program are entitled to study two semesters of Czech for foreigners free of charge. It is not obligatory but it might be handy.
