Dear students, dear students, colleagues,
I have the honour of greeting you for the second time at the introduction of the December newsletter. We are coming to the end of a year that, as in other years, has seen moments of success and disappointment. One glance through this year's newsletters, and we will immediately have success stories in the form of newly won projects of excellence, various types of prestigious awards for faculty members, and clever solutions to seemingly intractable problems in the faculty. Each of these examples represents a well-deserved reward for the complex, honest work of individuals and teams, and we should congratulate ourselves on our achievements and wish for more such results. Alongside this, however, there are also things that we are less successful at - some of which I pointed out at the launch of Humanities Week. I believe, however, that we will gradually be able to work together to correct these shortcomings. We just must not be afraid to admit them.
But let us leave aside the concrete results for a moment. Lately, I have become increasingly aware that more important than tangible success can be, and often is, time spent with loved ones on anything that makes sense to us. And it doesn't matter if it's your immediate family and the joys and sorrows of building and maintaining a home or if it's your colleagues and the moments with them as you discover new insights in your field. Both are rare in today's fast-paced and sometimes crazy times, and both are to be cherished. So, for the coming year, I wish you to make the moments when you and your loved ones do anything meaningful together as many as possible. And to the faculty, I want you to count your colleagues among your loved ones. If this is the case, the successes that the world around us measures us by will surely come.
And now, it only remains to invite you to the traditional December meeting with a glass of wine and beautiful melodies performed by the Ensemble Opera Diversa. I look forward to seeing you on Wednesday, December 20 in the foyer of the B2 building.
