Popis | From November 1914 till May 1915, a frontline between Austro-Hungarian and Russian forces had been located in Eastern Carpathians, therefore on the territory of today’s Slovakia. Russian army carried out two main offensive events of large scale, that resulted in up to 45,000 dead soldiers and 250,000 wounded or taken as prisoners of war. Due to the mountainy terrain the fight operations took place in, the remnants of war-related activities have been preserved until nowadays, which is an excellent precondition for an archaeological reconnassaince. Two chosen sites are related to the second Russian offensive, that broke out in March the 20th, 1915 and it is known as the „Easter Battle in the Carpathians“. The first site - Kobyla hill, just above the tiny village of Výrava near Medzilaborce, contains several kilometres of trench system remains, some up to 1m in depth. The second site located at the top of the Staviska hill near Bardejov, consists mainly of trenches with stone face revetment. Our contribution and goal is to demonstrate first results of non-destructive reconnaissance of presented sites. |
