Popis | This paper draws on an industry report on feature film development, Commissioned by the Czech State Film Fund, based on 67 in-depth interviews with key Czech producers, screenwriters and directors. It shows how the typical business model of Czech film producers limits possibilities of more systematic screenplay development and more long-term production strategies. Development is described as a critical point of the Czech film production system, responsible for weak performance of Czech films at international festivals and foreign markets. As a side product, the study also describes the current state of the local producing. The presentation uses these outcomes to propose a broader historical argument explaining how the profession of film producer had to be re-established after 1989 and what development stages did it go through before it diversified into four basic producer types, identified by the report. The types are defined in Bourdieuian way as the mainstream commercial, the mainstream arthouse, the marginal commercial, and the marginal arthouse positions. For each of the types, the presentation picks examples to illustrate producers´ strategies. |
