Popis From the existence of negative linguistic attitudes of Canarian speakers towards their own variety, the present paper investigates the phonetic variation on the Canary Television (Televisión Canaria) news, focusing on the excess of standard Spanish sounds. The study is based on the fact that the negative linguistic attitudes and linguistic insecurity are perceptible in the media in those speakers whose function is directly related to the linguistic market. To prove this hypothesis four phonemes of the Spanish language and their phonetic realizations are analyzed in the speech of the presenters, reporters and interviewees in five news programs of Canary Television. The obtained results emphasize the importance of the linguistic market and the polyphonic and planned character of the language on television news as decisive factors affecting the disproportionate number of standard performances in announcers’ and reporters’ speech.
