Popis The paper focuses on the transformation of late ancient cities. Particularly northern Italian cities in the 5th and 6th century AD are in the center of my interest. At this time the transformation took place not only in the entire ancient civilization but also in its partial aspects (e.g., cities). A typical ancient city full of monumental architecture incorporated into a comprehensive business network, demographically and spatially large changed in many cases in Late Antiquity and transformed into early medieval relatively small, self-contained and isolated fortresses that stand out for their fortifications. Does it mean that these characteristics are marks of decline and fall, or vitality (life expectancy) of the classical concept of the ancient city?
