Popis The case of the Milan domes makes possible to understand how the Roman tradition was transfigured by the fifth century. If in Sant'Aquilino was still an integral part of the roman tradition, in San Vittore in Ciel d'oro everything is different. The decorations and the play of illusions are replaced by an effective austerity which wants, by unpublished formal instruments, to allow the intimate encounter between the viewer and the saint represented. This new visual canons seems to be arrived with migrants (which bring a non-mimetic aesthetic), but must also result from a fundamental change in the cultural expectations of Roman and Christian intellectuals: as Plotinus, they want to activate their "inner eye", channel that allows to live an "iconic presence".
