Popis The dictionary of Joaquín García Icazbalceta, unfortunately unfinished, is a valuable source for several types of lexicographical, lexicological or sociolinguistic studies. In the present work we will focus on the linguistic attitudes towards Mexican Spanish that are exposed there, following above all the López Morales model (1991). Our objective is to verify to what extent the author followed the ideas of linguistic purism and the Eurocentrism of Spanish, promoted consciously or unconsciously by the Royal Spanish Academy and by the corresponding academies, and see whether the lexicographer shared or not the concerns about the unity of the Spanish language that worried so many scholars at that time. Another area of our interest will be his attitudes towards the lexical features of Mexican popular speech, especially the urban one, which are present in the dictionary. We will focus preferentially on those that can be found in the microstructure of the dictionary, especially in the texts of the definitions. The study could have a double purpose: to understand better the historical sociolinguistic and lexicological aspects of the García Icazbalceta’s Vocabulary, an important source for Mexican linguistics but little studied so far, and at the same time provide interesting data on the history of urban popular speech in Mexico in the second half of the nineteenth century, which is another gap in the history of Spanish that should be addressed urgently.
