Popis | Martyrdom of four Franciscan friars in 1321 Indian town of Thana became a frequent subject of multiple narratives. The event is described in detail in several Latin medieval sources, namely in the letter of Jordanus Catalani, in the account of Odoric of Pordenone, or in Franciscan Chronicle of Twenty-Four Generals. The paper compares these narratives with reports of Franciscans in China, who seem not to praise this sacrifice brought by their fellow friars. The paper suggests why memories of this event and its aftermath were revived in Europe and Mongol China quite differently. |
