Popis The main purpose of the present study is to apply the lexicostatistical test to the appellative lexicon of the language of the oldest runic inscriptions in context of other Germanic languages. For this purpose around 60 different lexemes with probable semantics were identified in inscriptions dated from the 2nd to the 6th centuries CE. The results are practically identical for both West Germanic and North Germanic. This means that the ‘Old Runic’ language could truly represent a common predecessor of both North and West Germanic languages.
