Deaf learners' processing of English textbook material : An eye-tracking study

| Popis | The paper introduces an eye-tracking study investigating text processing of Czech deaf learners when dealing with an English language textbook page. Eye movements of deaf respondents and hearing controls were recorded when performing a reading comprehension task to determine whether the two groups differ in processing text accompanied by semantically related and unrelated illustrations. The reason for asking about the influence of the layout and the rendering of reading comprehension tasks in textbooks of English used with deaf learners is that although reading has long been recognized as one of the key educational issues in deaf learners education, we still know very little about the actual processes taking place. Moreover, even though deaf students are customarily considered to be visual learners there is a lack of scientific evidence supporting this fact. The aim of the study was to compare the way deaf and hearing learners process textbook reading tasks and show tendencies in their way of doing it, which would be informative for textbook development for deaf students. |
