Popis The attitude of Innocent III towards the conquest of Constantinople on the 9th of April 1204 by the crusader army still evokes a lively discussion among the representatives of modern historiography. Forming their views on the above-mentioned research issue, they rely almost entirely on the chronicles related to the Fourth Crusade or on the papal correspondence in the period after the conquest of both the ecclesiastical and secular metropolis of the Byzantine Empire. There is very little attention reserved to the correspondence between Pope Innocent III and the emperor Alexios IV. In our contribution, we aim to reflect on the nature of the relationship between the pope and emperor based on above mentioned preserved correspondence. The focus of our lecture will be on the causes that eventually led to the establishment of diplomatic contact between Rome and Constantinople in the time of Alexios IV’s reign. We will also point out the benefits of the contents of said correspondence to the reconstruction of Innocent III’s attitude towards the Byzantine Empire during the Fourth Crusade.
