Popis | The article summarizes all etymological attempts at explaining the origin of Greek kithára, kitháre:, kítharis ‘lyre’, analyzes and evaluates them and offers a solution, which is based on the most convincing arguments of discussed etymologies seen in new perspectives. The most promising seems to be the solution anticipated by Ginsberg (1938) and developed by Franklin (2015), who see a primary source of Greek kithára etc. ‘lyre’ in Ugaritic k?rt ‘female singer, songstress’, which can be vocalized as *ku:?ara:tu.
