Popis In the figurative interpretations of the Afterlife in the Late Middle Ages, the organization of the geography of the otherworldly realms plays a fundamental role. Between twelfth and thirteenth century takes place a gradual systematization of the "third" places that complicated the initial dualism of Hell and Paradise. Only at the beginning of the 14th century these otherworldly realms known as "Antinfernus", "Limbo", "Paradise of the Justs", "refrigerium interim" will find a definitive arrangement and will crystallize around the three major realms of the Afterlife: Hell, Paradise and Purgatory. This article investigates some descriptions and figurative representations of some of these third places of the Afterlife in order to read them as a fundamental laboratory for the tripartite systematization of the lower Middle Ages (Hell-Purgatory-Paradise), in view of a future and more articulated reading of the development of the purgatorial iconographic theme.
