Popis | Following the theme of the book and the preceding workshop, the text focuses on two buildings – the first ever Sokol gymnasium, built in Prague in 1863–1864 according to the plans of Ignác Ullmann, and (probably) the first Turner gymnasium in Moravia, built according to the design of August Prokop in Brno in 1867–1868. The buildings are considered through questions of commission, function and art assignment, as contemplated, for example, by Michael Baxandall and Jiří Kroupa. Some factors, which were also crucial and formative for the final solution of the assignment, have been omitted – for example, the plot size, its location and thus the possibilities of the building’s orientation, the materials used, the factor of the financial cost of construction, etc. The paper focuses instead on the intentions of the builders and architects. Thanks to personal memoirs, it is possible to observe what kind of influence the patron of the Sokol gymnasium, Jindřich Fügner, had on the building’s design. In the case of the Brno turnhalle, it is possible to examine the architect’s inspiration in his teachers (Friedrich von Schmidt, Gustav L. Martens) and the contemporary construction of gymnasiums in the German states. |
