Popis | The paper discusses the notion of “Ukrainian Baroque”, the rationale behind its introduction and its ideological underpinnings. It addresses, too, the so-called “Ukrainian Neobaroque” the quest for Baroque elements in Ukrainian contemporary art. Introduced in 1911 by Hryhorii Pavlutskyi, Ukrainian Baroque went through a number of changes, from a label for the local version of the European historic style to the truly national style that still lasts and embraces all expressionist and atectonic artistic forms. As we argue, the unique status of Baroque in Ukraine reflects both the desire to narrate an uninterrupted history of Ukraine and its art that could date back to at least early modern times and the attempt to have Ukrainian European identity asserted after the Soviet Union’s collapse. |
