Popis | Solvere debitum: The Basics of Medieval Marriage According to Jan Hus In the Middle Ages, married life had a somewhat ambiguous status. From one point of view, this union of man and a woman was sanctified by God Himself (Mt 19:5-6), while on the other hand Saint Paul says it is good for a man not to touch a woman (1 Cor 7:1). Yet marrige was necessary to establish the family and maintain order in human society. Several medieval treatises describe how a man and a woman can live as a proper married Christian couple while avoiding sin. In the paper, I will present a treatise on marriage written by Bohemian preacher Jan Hus in the early 15th century. Together with its author, we will take a closer look especially at „marital duties“. |
