Popis | The latest geophysical survey in Pliska and Preslav found that large parts of both sites show organized residential development of regular settlement structure with a regular network of roads lined with fenced courtyards. Our survey shows buildings of various kinds, including churches and multi-room residential stone houses often surrounded by a large number of wooden sunken huts. The structure of the built-up areas in Pliska and Preslav reveals a system for which we do not know a direct analogy. Although sunken huts are a common type of house in the Balkans, as well as in Central and Eastern Europe, the sacral and profane stone architecture – despite its local antecedents – has its roots mostly in Byzantium. |
