Spatial and Visual Metaphors in Mongolian Proverbs: A Preliminary View

| Popis | In a language as powerfully visual as Mongolian, it will be no surprise that genres such as riddles and proverbs are replete with visual imagery. These instances include spatial designations, special metaphors, visual metaphors, the use of ideophones, and other verbal techniques creating powerful images to convey the message behind a given proverb. In my presentation, I will look at some of the spatial and visual metaphors used to convey traditional teachings in Mongolian proverbs, largely drawing from proverbs collected by the scholar Antoine Mostaert in his Ordos aman zohiolin tsomirlog (Textes Oraux Ordos) and from the collection Mongol tsetsen ügiin dalai II (The Ocean of Mongolian Proverbs II). Interestingly, some proverbs closely resemble riddles expressing the same teachings, reminding us of the strong didactic messages that can lie behind oral folklore. |
