Popis | This study examines the potential of official town books of Prešov as a source for researching women's status in the 18th century. It focuses on analyzing protocols from town council meetings and their informative value for research in women's history. The paper highlights the quantitative and qualitative significance of these sources, providing valuable information about the legal, economic, and social status of women of various ranks in the urban environment. Through specific examples, the study demonstrates the possibilities of using the protocols to reconstruct women's life stories and examine their role in urban society. The study presents official books as a relevant and hitherto underappreciated source for research on women's history in the early modern period. The study analyzes entries concerning women in various life situations - from orphans to single women to widows, thus providing a comprehensive picture of women's status in 18th-century urban society. The research reveals that women had greater legal subjectivity and economic independence than traditionally assumed.
