| Popis | The subject of the planned contribution is the processing of a largely overlooked topic - the function of the city chamberlain within the self-government of the free royal city of Prešov during the 18th century. This issue has not yet been the subject of systematic scientific research in the field of Slovak early modern urban history. The need for processing is amplified by the fact that current publications lack a more detailed description and clarification of the competencies of individual official functions within self-governing structures of early modern cities, whose character changed due to Enlightenment changes and reforms directed by central offices, moving away from the form of medieval urban functions. The contribution focuses on mapping the agenda carried out by this important city official and placing his activities in the context of the functioning of administrative and economic mechanisms of Prešov's municipal self-government in the given period. Attention will be paid to defining the legal status and competencies of the city chamberlain based on the normative regulations and orders of that time. The contribution will also focus on reconstructing the daily practice and activities associated with this office. For this purpose, archival sources from the Prešov City Magistrate fund will be used, especially city books and official documents, which will allow for a detailed capture of the scope and nature of the agenda managed by the chamberlain. The aim of the contribution is to highlight the key role of the city chamberlain in the administrative and economic life of the free royal city of Prešov in the 18th century and to provide a detailed elaboration of this part of the local self-government structure in its early modern form. At the same time, it will allow for a better understanding of the internal organization and mechanisms on which the self-government of this important urban center in the territory of former Hungary was based during the given period. |
