| Popis | This contribution is focused on research on crosscultural differences in the process of visual search on maps. It concentrates mainly on searching for point features on maps using eye-tracking methodology, offering a perspective on the potential applications of eye-tracking data in theoretical cartographic research. The stimulus material consists of two unique sets of symbols and color schemas designed to highlight differences in their visual searchability. These proposed symbol sets vary in the parameters of different visual variables (e.g., shape, color, etc.) and simulate symbol sets for large-scale maps. The findings, in general, support previous studies, such as the significant effect of color contrast between the target symbol and the topographic background, the considerable attraction to the red color, and the impact of the relative position of the target symbol on the speed and success of its identification. A detailed examination of the observed effects was made possible by objective data obtained through the eye-tracking method. The results have the potential to contribute to a deeper understanding of the visual search process in map reading and reveal the influence of selected visual variables and the relative position of the target on strategies used for visual symbol search. Future research could focus on other variables affecting visual search. For instance, the influence of various systems of written language representation might introduce distinct visual search strategies or varying responses to the visual variables used on maps. |
