Popis This paper focuses on a comprehensive analysis of the restoration ceremony of the city magistrate in Prešov during the 18th century, with particular emphasis on the reign of Maria Theresa. The presentation examines the dynamics between established traditions and new elements that emerged in this important urban ritual within the context of the Habsburg monarchy's centralization and modernization efforts. The analysis is based on the examination of city books, magistrate meeting minutes, correspondence with superior offices, and royal chancellery ordinances. The paper maps the development of the restoration ceremony, identifying key ritual elements, their symbolic meaning, and gradual changes in their execution and perception. The contribution addresses several interconnected aspects of the ceremony. It examines the traditional structure of the ritual and its roots in medieval city rights, tracking how this structure gradually changed. Special attention is paid to the role of religious elements in the ceremony and the symbolism of space and time during the ceremonial execution. In this context, the paper also addresses the urban society's reactions to innovations in the traditional ceremony, examining the tension between maintaining autonomy and adapting to new political realities. The analysis shows how the restoration ceremony reflected changing power relations between city and state, as well as the internal dynamics of urban society. The paper contributes to a better understanding of the role of rituals and ceremonies in the political and social life of early modern cities and their transformations during the age of enlightened absolutism. It also offers a new perspective on the implementation process of Maria Theresa's reforms at the local level and on how urban elites navigated between tradition and innovation in their effort to maintain autonomy and prestige. The presentation thus not only enriches our knowledge about municipal self-government functioning in the 18th century but also contributes to a broader discussion about the relationship between power, ritual, and social change in the early modern period.
