Popis The language and culture of indigenous Mongolians living beyond Mongolia have long represented significant research topics. This paper examines China’s bilingual education policy and its implementation in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. The bilingual education policy in Xinjiang has emerged as one of the most controversial initiatives in the region in recent decades. Initially, it was perceived as supportive of both Chinese and indigenous languages. However, in the early to mid-2000s, the entire education system in Xinjiang was transformed into a bilingual model that limited opportunities for indigenous peoples to receive formal education in their mother tongue. This radical shift has resulted in Mandarin Chinese becoming the dominant language. This paper uses the Mongolian community as a primary example to discuss the dual language policy in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. It will also reference the Uyghurs, the region’s largest ethnic group. I will focus on two key issues: first, the implementation of the dual-language policy in Xinjiang and the associated language policy challenges, and second, the efforts of the Mongolian community in Xinjiang to preserve their native language. The findings presented are based on field research conducted by the author in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region between 2017 and 2019.
