Popis | This article explores the multifaceted scholarly examination of the Mongolian ritual of worshipping ovoo, emphasizing its profound contribution to the revival, preservation, and transmission of local oral traditions and historical memories. In particular, it focuses on the unique exclamation "Tsöög khairkhan," employed by residents of the western regions of Mongolia, specifically in Uvs and Khovd provinces, during the ritual, where participants raise their 'tsatsal' (a dipper for milk libation). The ritual of milk libation is a significant practice in the daily lives of Mongolian nomads. It is particularly associated with culturally substantial occasions, such as the Lunar New Year festival and ovoo worship (stone cairn). This exclamation is notably utilized by the Bayad ethnic group in Khyargas Soum and various Oirad groups throughout Mongolia and Xinjiang. In this presentation, the author explains this custom through the lens of the Ovoo sacrifice ritual and the oral memories of belonging which are linked to the ritual tradition. The sacred mountains of Borkhairkhan, Tsagaanhairkhan, and Tsogthairkhan in Khyargas Soum are rich in legends about the past of the Bayad ethnic group. To varying degrees, these narratives are actively retold during the annual Ovoo sacrifice, thereby preserving these cultural stories across generations. Consequently, the ritual of the Ovoo sacrifice serves as a critical reminder of the unified historical memories that bind the local community, reinforcing their cultural identity and continuity. |
