Popis The Bayad Dejailin Monastery, frequently referenced in travellers' accounts and recorded historical events, served as a significant religious and cultural centre, playing a pivotal role in the cultural and political life of Western Mongolia throughout the 20th century. According to archival documents from 1938, at its dissolution, the monastery comprised nine Datsan (colleges), eleven Dugan (temples), ten Jas (economic units), and a community of 726 lamas, with an annual income of one hundred eighty-seven thousand two hundred tugriks. This indicates that the Dejailin monastery was a powerful and extensive religious entity. The monastery's origins, spiritual activities, legends, and oral traditions about its resident monks form a rich tapestry of intangible cultural heritage in Khyargas Soum, Uvs Province. The available information and documentation related to the Dejailin monastery can help elucidate the region's historical memory. This paper will explore the significant role that the Dejailin Monastery played in strengthening the spiritual identity of the Bayad ethnic group. The discussion will unfold in three sections. First, I will examine the monastery's function as a political and economic centre. My primary assertion in this section is that the relocation of the monastery to present-day Khyargas Soum was significantly influenced by political rivalries among the Tsoros clan chiefs. Second, I will explain how the Dejailin Monastery served as the principal spiritual guide and philosophical foundation for the Bayad ethnic group. The ovoo ritual, for instance, exemplifies how individuals formulated a harmonious relationship with nature. Performed at the beginning of each summer, this ritual imparted wisdom regarding the importance of nurturing a respectful relationship with the environment. It promoted a light and sustainable way of life. Third, I will investigate how the Dejailin Monastery is embodied in the long songs, literature, and folklore of the Bayad ethnic group. Through this analysis, I aim to comprehensively understand the cultural and spiritual significance of the Bayad Dejailin Monastery and its enduring legacy within the Bayad community.
