Popis | The paper examined the issue of the existence and the source of the discretionary powers of Roman emperors during the Principate (27 BCE–284 CE). The testimonies of both narrative and legal sources were taken into consideration with special attention paid to the only extant lex imperii (69 CE). The "acceptance theory" of a princeps gaining legality for his position through the consensus universorum, originating with the German historian Egon Flaig, was of great importance in the investigation process. |
