Popis The study moves in three directions: first, it explores the presence and negotiation of economic themes in literature, through time and up to the beginning of the 21st century, with emphasis on major crisis periods in world history. At a second level, it discusses Greek literary texts written during the decade 2010-2020 that form distinctive economic worlds and literary characters. Greek writers provide multiprismatic readings of modern Greek identity, conceive of the crisis as a prolonged permanence, and link the concept of power to authoritarian connotations. At the same time, they reflect on the content of the concept of 'Europe' and perceive work in contemporary societies as a synonym for existential angst. Finally, the study examines selected international texts that represent post-memorandum Greece and the Greek Other at the moment of economic as well as socio-political turmoil. These texts incorporate discourses of solidarity or stereotypical constructions towards the Greek world, examine the European collective and the relations of balance between European North and South, while forming a framework of intra-European reflection with clear political demands for the European future. By examining literature as a cultural response to the recession, as well as a means of promoting political and economic ideas, the study aims to answer the question of whether there is, in fact, a "literature of crisis".
