Popis Combining corpus-based translation studies with cognitive linguistics this study is concerned with the factors directing translators’ selection of translation equivalents. It draws on Sandra L. Halver-son’s gravitational pull model in which she assumes that the more salient linguistic item either in the source or the target language, the higher the likeliness of its being chosen by translators. I have picked the Czech item jako, which among various other functions serves as an equative and similative standard marker. In this talk I present the preliminary results of mapping the relative salience – operationalized here in terms of relative frequencies in reference corpora – of the senses of jako and of the corresponding expressions in English. The study is part of a bigger project whose aim is to see if Halverson’s results can be reproduced on the English–Czech language pair and, hopefully, to refine the existing theory.
