Metaphors of violence in text and on stage: a cognitive analysis of Shakespeare’s Hamlet

The issue of Shakespeare and violence in his works has been in the focus of attention of predominantly literary scholars. Hamlet usually stands among the plays where violence plays an important role in the plot and character development. We offer to look at metaphorical projections of violence in Shakespeare’s Hamlet and how they are transformed and developed in the stage production by Lindsey Turner. A Cognitive Theater Studies approach has been applied to the analysis of metaphors of violence both in the play and production showing how verbal metaphors are transformed and enhanced by the director as collective author.
Svitlana Shurma is a post-doctoral student and an Associate Professor of English Philology and Translation Department at Borys Grinchenko Kyiv University and a part-time lecturer at the National Aviation University, Ukraine.
