Czechoslovakia / 1979 / 90 min. / dir.: Karel Smyczek / audio: Czech / subtitles: English
At a girls' boarding school, a story unfolds about first loves, hopes, and harsh disappointments. It portrays girls who are gentle and shy, as well as those who are characterized by ruthlessness. Debut director Karel Smyczek (a former child star of Czech cinema) opened a wave of narratives about adolescent youth with his film. The authenticity of the situations remains valuable, and the strong performances contribute significantly to the overall success. "Housata" certainly achieved its own distinctiveness, yet it still bears the influence of the 1960s, particularly in the tragicomic, sentimental portrayal of the young heroines.
The screening will be followed by two live performances in the foyer.
