Ivan Rumánek: The Continuity in Tradition of Classical Japanese Theatre

A distinctive feature of Japanese culture is its sense of continuity. The geographically compact environment of the Japanese islands has rarely been penetrated by stimuli unrelated to the existing status quo, and most innovations and new currents can be traced in the context of domestic tradition. This is also true of classical Japanese theatre and its genres of nôgaku and kabuki. The lecture will provide a traversal of these traditions in terms of continuities of rhythm, themes, texts, stage or acting stylization.
