2:00 PM – 4:00 PM - Room D51, Arna Nováka 1, Brno
We cordially invite you to the round table Literature and Literary Science Abroad and the Formation of a Resilient Society organized by the Institute for Czech Literature of the CAS, the Faculty of Arts of Masaryk University and the Brno Narratology Circle. The guests will be prof. Petr Steiner (University of Pennsylvania), prof. Bohumil Fořt (Faculty of Arts MU) and doc. Ondřej Sládek (Institute of the CAS).
How can Czech literature and science developed abroad contribute to the resilience of (not only) Czech society? Can we think about Czech literary science in exile? What is the current situation of Czech literary science abroad?
The main guest of the round table is Prof. Petr Steiner - Czech-American Slavist, literary theorist, historian and translator. In 1964-1968 he studied Bohemistics, Russian Studies and Aesthetics at Charles University in Prague. In 1968, he went into exile in Austria, and later to the United States. He graduated from Yale University and later worked mainly at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.
The discussion with Prof. Steiner will take the form of a debate on the life and work of this important Czech literary scholar, but a great deal of space will also be devoted to current issues of the contemporary world, geopolitical order, changes in society and the possibilities of shaping its resilience.
The event will take place on 6 June 2024 at 2 pm in classroom D51 at the Faculty of Arts of the Masaryk University in Brno (Arna Nováka 1, building D, 5th floor) within the framework of the research programme of the AV21 Strategy "Resilient Society for the 21st Century".
