Family structure is one of the standard predictors of socioeconomic achievement of children. Traditionally a simple indicator variable to differentiate between “complete” and “incomplete” families was a sufficient modeling strategy. This practice seems indefensible any longer, since the incidence,
sources, and forms of “non-intact” families have changed dramatically. This project proposes to distinguish various types of “non-intact” families and to estimate their effects on attainments and the degree of intergenerational status reproduction. Furthermore, we want to employ these new measures to
correct recent finding on trends in inequality of opportunity. The project would utilize existing survey data and would analyze them using a variety of generalized linear models.
