The general aim of the project will be to analyze critically the paths leading from the oriental sources of the origin of script in general to the circumstances of the adaptation of Phoenician script to the needs of the Greek language, as well as to the rapid spread of the Greek alphabet in both the Greek and non-Greek communities throughout the Eastern and Central Mediterranean area (i.e. both the Helladic-Aegean-Microasiatic-Pontic and the Italic-Sicilian-Iberian areas) and to its transformation into a number of local alphabetic variants during the 1 st millennium B.C. - including an analysis of Greek dialectal development as well as an outline of further development of both the Greek and Latin alphabets.
