The major aim of the project is to explore and describe sociologically the processes of formation and articulation of generational identity in a post-revolutionary society, and to analyze patterns of inter-generational conflict within historically new social, economic, and political conditions.
The project stems from the conviction (and empirical evidence) that inter-generational relations are as much important for the question of social cohesion as are relations among social classes, ethnic relations, or gender relations. Compared to these other fields of social relations, however, the current Czech sociological production on generations and inter-generational conflict in post-revolutionary conditions remains considerably poor. The question of social cohesion is the central analytical perspective of the project, which is designed to:
1. map out the forms and ways of articulation of generational conflict after 1989, particularly in the Czech Republic;
2. analyze and interpret sociologically the social conditions or contexts, in which generational consciousness and conflicting inter-generational relations are shaped and reproduced experientially. The major institutional/social contexts within which these questions will be pursued are: family, work (labor market and education), and politics (civic participation in particular).
