This project aims to understand the process of political journalism from the perspective of both
journalists and politicians. Focussing on the Czech Republic and Austria as two countries with
similar political and media systems, but which also exhibit important differences, the project
aims to examine a range of influences on this process, ranging across micro-, meso- and macrolevels. Through longitudinal in-depth interviews with political journalists and politicians in both
countries, focus groups and content analysis, the project will examine journalists’ and
politicians’ emotions as a common denominator for the professional behaviour of these actors.
While the project will generate important insights from a scholarly perspective, it has also the
ambition to make a crucial real-world impact. Hence, beyond disseminating research results
through the usual scholarly avenues, it will develop an innovative tool, interactive guidelines for
journalists and politicians on how to engage in their own emotional management.
