Description The author of the present contribution deals with the traditions and contemporary state, especially of Polish genre studies (genology) which also inspired and still inspires Czech genology. He states the general crisis of the notion „genology“ itself which is being manifested in various studies concerning the theory of literary genres including Polish genology where quite a lot new centres besides those of Wrocław and Łódź that has been publishing the only European journal focused on genre studies (genology) Zagadnienia Rodzajów Literackich. Nowadays, Polish genology is characterized by polycentrism and dispersion of genological discourse. In Poland, where the questions of literary genres have been linked to phenomenology since the 1930s, some new approaches and trends appeared, such as cultural and area studies, hermeneutics, deconstruction, cognitivism etc. which are being applied to it. The perspectives of genre studies (genology) as a discipline of literary criticism are, however, rather uncertain.
