Description Self-evaluation of primary and eight-year secondary school pupils focused on necessary introductory skills at the subject chemistry was investigated by means of a questionnaire survey among students of two groups. The first group consisted of 328 pupils of 7th grade of primary schools and 1st grade of eight-year secondary schools, who completed the questionnaire at the end of the school year 2010/2011 (i.e. in the period prior to learning chemistry). The second group was represented by 350 pupils by one year older (i.e. 8th grade pupils of primary schools and 2nd grade pupils of eight-year secondary schools after one year of learning chemistry). The schools were chosen so that both groups of respondents were represented by urban and country primary school and eight-year secondary school. This article is processing the results of the survey, compares with each other not only the answers of both groups of pupils, but also the responses of primary school pupils and eight-year secondary schools. The final part of the questionnaire was a question, what would pupils like to learn at chemistry. The article discusses also these responses of respondents.
