Description | A preliminary investigation into the repertory of the Brno manuscripts has focused on a description and analysis of their contents and an examination of how the repertory reflects liturgical practices at the parish church of St James in Brno around 1550. By this time the town community had largely turned to Lutheranism, although unofficially and somewhat covertly due to Brno's status as a royal town. As a result of these unique confessional circumstances, only a small amount of archival material relating to the parish church and school has been preserved. Nevertheless, it is clear that liturgical books originating from the end of the 15th century were still used in the middle of the 16th century, and the polyphonic repertory (Josquin Desprez, Isaac, Brumel, De La Rue, Finck, Stoltzer and others) gathered in these manuscripts was intended to supplement the monophonic repertory. |
