Description On 2 February 1350, Margrave John Henry issued a charter, in which he announced the foundation of a monastery of the Augustinian Hermits in the suburbs of Brno. The monastery was dedicated to the Virgin Mary and St. Thomas the Apostle. The foundation charter of the Carthusian monastery in Královo Pole was issued by Margrave John Henry on 13 August 1375. It reads that the margrave was the first person who, with the consent of his sons Jobst, John Soběslav and Prokop as well as his wife Elisabeth, introduced the Carthusian Order to the Margravate of Moravia by means of providing the village of Královo Pole with his piece of land or yard in order to build a monastery of the aforementioned order in honour of the Holy Trinity. Rather than strengthening the margrave's power in the land, both monasteries were related to inner piety and family representation: enhanced in the first case by the sepulchral role of the institution and in the second by the contemplative and educational character of the community.
