| Description | This article presents the documents forming the legislative framework of the inquisitional procedure in the 13th-14th centuries, and discusses the shape of inquisitional trials in this period. The text is framed by Christine Caldwell Ames' article "Does Inquisition Belong to Religious History?" (American Historical Review 110/1 (2005): 11-37). It actually considers the inquisitional procedure to be a part of religious history, and a topic that can point to some limitations of the prevailing concept of religion, still based upon Enlightenment’s normative notion of (good) religion as disconnected from the contaminating impact of power, economy, coercion, and violence. |
