Description The aim of the paper is to define factors of socioeconomic development of regions by an application of factor analysis. The socioeconomic development is one of the key parameters of successful regional development. Factor analysis contains 18 indicators of socioeconomic development of regions and it is applied on 248 NUTS 2 regions of the EU. The results of the analysis are five factors that determine socioeconomic environment of the region. Finally, there is proposed an alternative methodology for assessing socioeconomic development of regions by composite indicator made of formerly identified factors. The results indicate differences between regions of single state (Italy, Spain, and Germany). As most advanced have been identified regions of capital cities and regions of western Europe, as least advanced regions of southern and eastern Europe.
