Description Exhortative speech about how philology, i.e. both linguistics and all kind of literary science, can, and should, acquire self-confidence. The preliminary condition is to keep for its own, and hold as its exclusive property, the key notions of (1) the meaning of a/any linguistic expression, and (2) the sense of a/any text. Then, a good technique of manipulating the linguistic signs is required: a linguistic sign does not point to anything outside the language, it assumes a value inside the language, and this value cannot be established but by differentiating it from other signs within a definition set of system-allowed linguistic signs.
