Description | This study is devoted to analysis of latency impact of various network data trans- fer protocols to performance. The data transfers protocols were selected to match the protocols that CESNET Data Storage department uses for communication with clients, these protocols include FTP and FTP with SSL, SCP, rsync and rsync over ssh, NFSv4 with and without Kerberos authentication and encryption, and CIFS. The protocols were evaluated in two ways: 1. on dedicated hardware and dedicated local and wan area network connection to analyse latency impact without bias, 2. in a real-world setup using the production national backbone network. We used various types of load, e.g., number of small files, several large files, reads, writes to simulate typical user access scenarios. We conclude with recommendation of appropriate pro- tocol for particular work load types. |
