Description The paper deals with the possibilities of applying the category of unreliable narration to autobiographical texts. I argue that these possibilities are limited since unreliability is an effect created by the author of the work. Next, an analysis of Max Frisch's Montauk is presented. This autobiographical work combines factual narration with the use of fictional devices, and it thematizes the performative nature of autobiography: the process of writing an autobiography is at the same time a process of constructing one's identity. Unreliable narration does not prove useful for interpreting this book, as the discrepancies contained in the text perform a different function in the work as a whole.
